Trailer hooks are useful when the fish are less aggressive and they don't take the whole fish in the mouth, preventing hooking. Choose the length in proportion to that of your lure. Be careful that the trailer hook does not interfere with the movement of the lure, either by pricking it in a sensible place or by simply letting it "float" next to the lure.
